Summary: Provides genetic counseling to patients with a medical or family history of pediatric or adult onset genetic diseases and coordinates program services.

Requirements

  • Masters: Genetic Counseling (Required)
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • One (1) year of experience in pediatric or general genetic counseling, rotations and/or internships will be considered.
  • Requires a Certified Genetics Counselor (CGC) certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) within 12 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops genetic counseling plans, including risk assessment, referrals, education, life planning options, and treatment options.
  • Provides counseling and education to patients and their families.
  • Identifies and provides referrals for testing, treatment, support, and advocacy.
  • Researches, maintains, and applies knowledge of trends and developments in genetic disease research, testing, and treatment.
  • Collects, reviews and interprets family/medical histories, medical records, test results, and other relevant/necessary information.
  • Coordinates testing and communicates results to referring healthcare provider.
