The Collection Services Division of the Environmental Services Department is seeking to hire a paid intern through the Employ and Empower program. The work location is 8353 Miramar Place, San Diego, CA 92121. Work hours are flexible between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and an alternative or hybrid work schedule may be available with supervisory approval.The intern will support the department on special projects performing tasks including but not limited to the areas of administration, management, research, computer programming, database management, writing, procedure optimization, documentation, planning, analysis, data management, data science, GIS, and interacting with administrative and operational staff and members of the public. Special projects will be assigned and prioritized by a direct supervisor or member of the management team. Once SMART goals have been established with their supervisor, the intern will choose multiple specific areas to focus on during their internship. The supervisor will support and monitor areas of pursuit to include:• Route optimization and strategic planning using ArcGIS Pro and open-source software• High-density vehicle routing problem (VPR)• Smart solid waste management (SWM) information systems• Remote sensing• Network analysis• Geomatics for smart cities• Process automation• Database management• Documentation• Process optimization• Data science and machine learning• Enterprise GIS• Web GIS• Object-oriented programming• Cartography• Performing house counts with GIS tools• GIS model development• Report Writing The successful candidate will be a team player, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, be detail-oriented, able to handle various duties and deadlines simultaneously and interact with various individuals to assist in the operations of the division. OVERVIEW: The City of San Diego consists of more than 30 operational departments. Internships are available when project-based opportunities arise amongst departments. With general supervision, an internship provides part-time employment opportunities for students enrolled in a continuing education, traditional education, or training program to gain hands-on experience related to their career interests or area of study. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Duties and responsibilities assigned to interns will vary depending on the department they are assigned; these include but are not limited to: assisting with planning events, conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, assisting with projects, preparing reports and presentations, attending internal and external stakeholders’ meetings, and field work. Work will be project-based, temporary, and not compromise the work of a bargaining unit employee.
