About The Position

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture. The Google XR team is a group of engineers, designers, and research scientists tasked with building the platforms that enable computing required for great immersive and augmented experience and prototyping helpful, delightful user journeys. You will be an integral member of the team, responsible for systems software design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing maintenance and enhancements. For decades, the computing revolution has reshaped our world driven by breakthroughs in compute, connectivity, mobile, and now, AI. Google's XR team is at the forefront of the next major leap – the convergence of AI and XR. This is more than just new devices – it's about reimagining how we interact with the world around us. We're building a future where lightweight XR devices pair with helpful AI to augment human intelligence, offering personalized, conversational, and contextually aware experiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 12 years of experience designing mechanical components such as plastic or metal parts, mechanical assemblies, printed circuit boards, or flexes.
  • 12 years of experience using computer-aided design (CAD) tools such as NX or Solidworks.
  • 12 years of experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) or design for assembly (DFA).
  • 4 years of experience leading multiple engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field.
  • 8 years of experience with consumer electronics, with focus on miniaturization, integration and manufacturing of system design.
  • Experience with executing designs for precision mechanical systems, including kinematic design and tolerance analyses.
  • Experience in scaled manufacturing, including manufacturing process and line design, bring-up and optimization.
  • Knowledge of optimal selection processes of materials, adhesives, and coatings used in optical systems.
  • Knowledge of end to end consumer electronics development processes and an ability to adapt development approaches to designs from prototypes to scaled manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, manufacturing and validation of head-worn devices, including waveguide, display engines, and Rx lenses.
  • Lead development and architecture efforts for miniaturization of novel mechanical and opto-mechanical subsystems, working with other system and cross-functional leads to arrive at robust and reusable designs optimized for consumer usage.
  • Work to drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) efforts from early NTI to prototype to mass production, working closely with internal and external partners and contract manufacturers.
  • Own and develop comprehensive requirements documents and tolerance stackup analyses to ensure performance and reliability of tightly constrained glasses through the conditions expected by mass production consumer hardware.
  • Be an advocate for the team and be responsible for helping individuals grow and succeed.
