The Role The Global Mass Vehicle Performance Owner (VPO) is the enterprise technical authority for vehicle mass engineering processes, methods, and toolchains across GM. This role is recognized as an expert in the field, responsible for developing and governing global standard work, data flows, and analytics that enable compliant, efficient, and competitive vehicle mass performance. The Mass VPO applies strong business acumen and complex problem‑solving techniques to define and execute the global mass engineering execution strategy, leading large cross‑functional initiatives that directly support GM’s strategic and regulatory objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, or related).
  • 10+ years of vehicle mass engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated expert‑level experience in vehicle mass engineering, including: Hands‑on responsibility for vehicle mass targets, content decisions, and/or certification mass Proven success resolving unusual, complex mass and data problems that span multiple systems or functions Certification and compliance regulations and standards (i.e. EPA, J2807, GMW15474, etc)
  • High level of oral and written communication skills, with the ability to frame complex technical content and influence diverse technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in GM systems & processes, including: GPDS (or equivalent mainframe/product data systems) NGVMC or similar vehicle mass/attribute management tools
  • Strong MS Excel (advanced formulas, data analysis; VBA/automation exposure preferred)
  • Vis Mockup and/or CAD/visualization tools relevant to mass and packaging
  • High‑level analytical capability, able to decompose ambiguous problems, structure analyses, and derive actionable insights from large, imperfect datasets.
  • Experience with PPC (Product Program Content) and VDS (Vehicle Description Summary) and their relationship to mass data and certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to: Define and implement standard processes and methods Lead cross‑functional problem solving without formal authority Drive adoption of new tools and ways of working across multiple teams
  • Experience with: Export mass and regulatory frameworks Leading or contributing to enterprise‑level process or tool deployments (e.g., NGVMC enhancements, new mass calculation engines, regulatory method updates).

Nice To Haves

  • 15+ years of vehicle mass engineering experience.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Strong Visual Basic / VBA skills or equivalent scripting experience used to automate engineering workflows or analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership & Expertise Serve as the enterprise technical expert for vehicle mass properties, covering curb mass, GVW, axle loads, payload, towing, and regulatory/certification mass across all global programs and architectures.
  • Provide deep technical support to Mass Engineers globally on complex topics including GPDS integration, NGVMC workflows, PPC/VDS alignment, BOM structures, CAD/Vis Mockup usage, and certification mass calculations.
  • Define the mass engineering data model and digital thread including content selection and model & option mass development to meet regulatory certification and compliance..
  • Interpret and operationalize global mass‑related regulations and standards into clear technical guidance, tools, and standard work for mass engineering teams globally.
  • Process, Methods, and Tools Ownership Own the global Mass Engineering process, including GPDS deliverables, project/tool workflows, and interfaces to upstream and downstream functions.
  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of all processes, methods, and RASIC-defined digital tools required to support Mass Engineers.
  • Establish and maintain authoritative global standard work, best practices, and checklists for: Model and option mass development Trailer / payload / towing mass evaluation EU and global mass regulatory compliance Integration of mass targets in architecture, performance, and cost trade‑offs
  • Define and track key KPIs and metrics, and drive corrective actions when performance is off‑track.
  • Global Governance & Change Leadership Set global objectives for mass engineering processes and tools and take responsibility for achieving associated KPIs, ensuring alignment to GM’s strategic priorities.
  • Ensure consistent global application of approved processes, methods, and standards; identify deviations and drive convergence to common practice while allowing for region‑specific regulatory needs.
  • Act as lead change agent for vehicle mass in forums that impact certification, compliance, and energy/CO₂ guidance (e.g., CSRB, TACER, Certification & Compliance, Energy and Range councils), ensuring mass implications and risks are understood and addressed.
  • Develop, plan, and implement solutions that require integration of multiple related teams (e.g., Mass Engineering, Vehicle Performance, Architecture, Energy, Certification, IT/Digital, Manufacturing) to resolve complex process or data issues at enterprise scale.
  • Champion change management, modeling GM Behaviors and building broad support for new processes and tools without inhibiting individuality and diversity.
  • People Leadership, Coaching, and Community Act as a global mentor and coach for Mass Engineers, especially newer employees, providing: Technical guidance on complex mass problems and trade‑offs; providing feedback to mass engineers and supporting them in various program team decisions and forums.
  • Coaching on effective use of NGVMC, GPDS, PPC, VDS, Vis Mockup, and supporting tools Build and sustain a global Mass Engineering community of practice, facilitating best‑practice sharing, technical reviews, and lessons learned across regions and programs.
  • Support GM’s virtual analysis vision by building cross‑functional teams and driving creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions that improve mass performance, data quality, and engineering efficiency.
  • Training, Documentation, and Knowledge Management Create, own, and regularly update global training curricula and technical documentation for all mass processes and tools, including: Role‑based training paths for new and experienced Mass Engineers Step‑by‑step guides for critical NGVMC and GPDS workflows Job aids for export mass regulatory calculations
  • Deliver live and virtual technical training globally and measure effectiveness through adoption, process adherence, and KPI improvements.
  • Maintain a single source of truth for Mass Engineering process and tool documentation on GM collaboration platforms, ensuring content is current, version‑controlled, and easily discoverable.
