About The Position

The Grant Writer is responsible for identifying, researching, writing, and managing grant proposals that support Meals on Wheels Sacramento County’s mission and programs. This position plays a critical role in securing public and private funding to sustain and expand services, including Home Delivered Meals, Congregate Cafés, and the Restaurant Program. Working closely with the Executive Director, Finance, Operations Director and Fund Development Director, the Grant Writer ensures timely submission of high-quality grant applications, accurate reporting, and compliance with funder requirements. The ideal candidate is a strong writer with excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to translate program impact and data into compelling funding narratives. This role supports both government and foundation grants, including local, state, and federal opportunities, and contributes to the organization’s overall funding diversification strategy.

Requirements

  • Two to five years’ experience with successful grant or proposal writing and administration, deadline tracking, and meeting funding goals.
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret grant guidelines, eligibility criteria, compliance requirements.
  • Excellent English communications skills, verbal and written
  • Ability to analyze program data and outcomes and incorporate them into grant narratives and reports.
  • Proficient computer skills with intermediate/advanced level of knowledge of program software and Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace programs (Word, Excel, Docs, Sheets).
  • Valid California driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration or closely related field is preferred.

  • Experience in program database systems and spreadsheet programs, particularly Instrumental and Blackbaud, preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit environments preferred.
  • Prior experience working effectively with older Adults preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Research, identify, and track funding opportunities from government agencies, foundations, corporations, and community partners aligned with Meals on Wheels Sacramento County programs and strategic priorities.
  • Write, edit, and submit high-quality grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and applications in a timely and organized manner.
  • Develop compelling narratives that clearly articulate organizational mission, program impact, outcomes, and community need.
  • Collaborate with Program Directors, Finance, and Leadership to gather data, budgets, metrics, and supporting documentation required for grant submissions.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency of program descriptions, financial information, and outcome reporting across all grant materials.
  • Manage grant calendars, deadlines, and submission schedules to ensure compliance with all funder requirements.
  • Track awarded grants, including reporting requirements, deliverables, and renewal timelines.
  • Prepare interim and final grant reports in coordination with Finance and program staff.
  • Maintain organized grant files and documentation for audits, monitoring visits, and internal review.
  • Support compliance with government and foundation grant regulations, including AAA4, City, County, CDA, and other funder requirements.
  • Assist with development of program budgets related to grant proposals and monitor allowable expenses.
  • Monitor grant performance metrics and outcomes to support accurate reporting and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in fund development planning, funding diversification strategies, and internal coordination meetings.
  • Support organizational storytelling and data collection to strengthen future funding opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain written policies and procedures for the department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the organization’s mission.
