About The Position

The Graphic Designer supports the Communications & Advancement team by creating engaging visual materials that advance The James Museum’s brand, exhibitions, programs, and community presence. This position plays a critical role in fulfilling creative services projects across departments while helping push the Museum’s visual identity forward through thoughtful, consistent, and high-quality design.

Requirements

  • Foundational graphic design skills with an understanding of layout, typography, color, and visual hierarchy
  • Experience creating print and digital design projects through coursework, internships, freelance work, or professional roles
  • Ability to follow brand guidelines while contributing creative ideas and solutions
  • Familiarity with designing for multiple platforms, including print, social media, email, and web
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to balance multiple deadlines
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work
  • College degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating design skills, creative thinking, and technical proficiency is required
  • Proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) required
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to shift priorities as project needs evolve
  • Comfortable working collaboratively within a team environment as well as independently
  • Brings creative vision while also being receptive to feedback and direction
  • Able to thoughtfully apply feedback to improve and refine design work
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Additional creative skills such as illustration, photography, video or audio editing are a plus
  • Interest in museums, arts, culture, or nonprofit work is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Design a wide range of print and digital materials in support of museum programs, exhibitions, events, advertising, and promotional efforts
  • Create visual assets for special exhibitions, including marketing collateral, in-gallery graphics, and supporting materials
  • Develop graphics for advertising campaigns, social media, email marketing, and other digital assets as needed
  • Support brand consistency by applying established visual identity standards across all projects
  • Collaborate with communications, education, and curatorial teams to translate concepts and goals into effective design solutions
  • Prepare production-ready files for print and digital distribution
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Participate in creative reviews and incorporate feedback into revisions in a timely and professional manner
  • Assist with general creative services needs as assigned
