The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position Seasonal Greenskeeper II.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, park maintenance or tree maintenance work.
  • Possession of a current and valid Mass. Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

  • Knowledge of the types and uses of hand power tools such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the procedures followed in greens keeping work.
  • Knowledge of the techniques followed in insect and weed control.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of pesticides.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools.
  • Skill in operating equipment used in greens keeping work such as lawnmowers, rototillers, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the seeding, sodding, cultivating, cutting and general upkeep of greens, lawns, shrubbery and grounds relating to a golf course in order to maintain proper conditions of fairways, tees, rough, greens, traps etc for recreational access by the public.
  • Inspect golf course areas to determine the scope of work to be performed and recommend to supervisor action to be taken in accordance with established standards; notify supervisors of damage to course by weather or vandalism and provide direction to work crew assigned.
  • Coordinate & perform construction of new greens, fairways and planting trees in order to continually improve conditions at the courses.
  • Operate all equipment [various types of mowers, tractors, aerators etc] and perform minor repairs to maintain proper working order.
  • Assist in scheduling of employees to ensure proper coverage of grounds maintenance activities.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Train new employees in the proper care and use of equipment.
  • Make recommendations to supervisors concerning parts, supplies and equipment to be ordered.
  • Determine when spraying, watering, overseeing, fertilizing and cutting of turf on green and tee areas are necessary.
  • Determine the suitability of golf courses for play before opening then to the public.
  • Provide on the job training to assigned employees.
  • Prepare written reports of work completed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
