About The Position

Eaton’s Research Lab (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position as an Intern on Energy Systems to support research and technology development in power grid intelligence programs. This position will be based at our Golden, Colorado office, and the internship period is May to August, 2026 The hourly rate for this position is $35.00-$40.00 per hour. What you’ll do: As a key contributor to ground-breaking research at Eaton Research Labs you will be performing research and development into cutting edge power grid technologies with identification of market opportunities, implementation and demonstration in realistic utility or critical facility environments. The successful candidate will be challenged with engaging in research programs on grid automation, infrastructure auto-monitoring and analysis, fault management, and data-driven Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) for power grid assets. You will work at the intersection of grid intelligence and AI/ML to develop next-generation solutions that improve the reliability, resilience, and observability of modern power distribution systems.

Requirements

  • PhD Student from an accredited institution or MS student with 3+ years of Industrial or Entrepreneurial experience
  • Good combination of education and application experience
  • Enthusiasm and capabilities in technology R&D, demonstration and presentation

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background in coding and software architecture design
  • Strong background with algorithm development, signal processing, data analysis, ML/DL with time series data
  • Strong background with LLMs, AI agent’s development and deployment, familiar with techniques such as RAG, MCP, Skills
  • Experience with building scalable data infrastructure and pipeline
  • Familiar with power systems such as distribution grid operations, SCADA data, fault analysis, and power quality.
  • Proficiency in Git and have a good understanding of it
  • Proficiency in programming languages Python and its libraries, such as PyTorch, scikit-learn

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical and/or project contributor in technology development and demonstration.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions contributing to technology strategy development.
  • Participate in external open innovation events with universities and research institutes.
  • Develop and apply data-driven PHM methods for power grid assets, including fault detection, degradation modeling, anomaly detection, and remaining useful life (RUL) estimation.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate machine learning and deep learning models, particularly for time-series data analysis.
  • Explore and prototype solutions leveraging large language models (LLMs) and AI agents for intelligent grid monitoring, diagnostics, workflow automation, or decision support.
