About The Position

This position leads a crew that is responsible for the maintenance of university grounds to include a wide variety of landscape and gardening duties such as, but not limited to, planting, rejuvenation, fertilization and weed control of landscape and flower beds. This may require utilizing a variety of hand tools and light to medium mechanized equipment such as pressure washers, forklift, carts, and trailers. The incumbent will prepare new or rejuvenated landscape sites with topsoil, decorative material and appropriate plantings according to supervisor’s instructions and/or landscape design plans. Assistance in special events will also be required. The incumbent must be able to identify plants, diseases, and undesirable pests and weeds associated with landscaping and apply corrective measures to eradicate them through the use of hand and powered tools and application of appropriate chemicals. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining grounds areas clean and free of trash, fallen leaves, standing water, snow and ice. This person will be responsible for supervising Grounds Maintenance Workers 2’s by assigning tasks, reviewing work, following disciplinary procedures, and completing performance evaluations. Must be able to independently prioritize and schedule grounds maintenance activities. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with varying levels of superiors and subordinates. The incumbent must possess basic computer skills to complete work orders, answer emails, and approve attendance in the appropriate online system. He or she will act as the primary trainer for their crew and be responsible for their safety and the safety of their work area. This position is also responsible for inventory and maintenance of assigned vehicles and tools. Must obtain and maintain Forklift Operator Certifications within the first 9 months of employment. Work Schedule is 6:00am – 2:30pm Monday through Friday. This schedule could be temporarily or permanently adjusted should the needs of the University require.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience providing grounds maintenance service including landscape, garden, or greenhouse maintenance; OR one year of experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker IV in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
