About The Position

Staff gynecologists at Student Health are responsible for providing comprehensive, patient-centered medical care to female students attending the University of Iowa. This includes evaluating and treating a wide range of health concerns, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, prescribing medications, and offering health education to support students’ overall well-being and academic success.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school. OB/GYN residency training required
  • Valid license to practice medicine in the State of Iowa.
  • Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of college health issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience fostering a welcoming and respectful clinical environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a higher education, college health, or student‑centered clinical setting.
  • Experience working with young adult or college‑aged populations in an outpatient or primary care environment.
  • Proficiency with Epic or similar electronic health record systems and strong clinical documentation skills highly desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams (e.g., counselors, nurses, physician assistants, psychiatrists).
  • Experience contributing to quality improvement, performance assessment, or clinical outcomes initiatives.
  • Commitment to health promotion, preventive care, and supporting student success through wellness‑focused care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive gynecologic evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for students.
  • Perform and/or order appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Prescribe, dispense, and monitor medications; adjust treatment plans based on patient response.
  • Manage multiple patients efficiently and respond directly to patient questions and concerns.
  • Counsel patients and families on diagnoses, treatment options, and self‑management strategies.
  • Coordinate care for patients with chronic or complex conditions, collaborating with specialists as needed.
  • Monitor patient progress and modify care plans to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of treatments using evidence‑based approaches.
  • Complete accurate and timely medical records, reports, and forms for clinical and billing purposes.
  • Document medications, diagnoses, procedures, and treatment plans in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Correct charting errors following established policies and advise junior staff on documentation, privacy, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Use accepted medical abbreviations and documentation practices to ensure clarity and efficiency.
  • Implement and uphold healthcare policies, ethical standards, and patient‑centered practices.
  • Participate in chart reviews, performance improvement initiatives, and clinical committees.
  • Review clinical performance data and recommend process improvements.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams in evaluating and enhancing clinical performance.
  • Leverage technology to support data sharing, quality monitoring, and improved patient outcomes.
  • Analyze new treatment techniques and integrate appropriate innovations into clinical practice
  • Provide health education to patients to support informed decision‑making and proactive self-care.
  • Teach and mentor health professions students and residents.
  • Support student learning, retention, and success through health promotion initiatives.
  • Train colleagues and junior staff in clinical skills, counseling techniques, and best practices.
  • Consult and collaborate with primary care providers, specialists, pharmacists, and other care team members.
  • Communicate effectively with audiences using clear, appropriate language and media.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships across the organization.
  • Resolve conflicts, facilitate consensus, and promote a collaborative team environment.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination within the care team.
  • Serve on committees to enhance patient care, clinical operations, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Participate in evaluating and implementing new medical services, technologies, and office tools.
  • Contribute to performance management by coaching staff, recognizing achievements, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Assist in developing procedures for patient assessment, documentation, and handling inquiries.
