About The Position

The Head Throwing Coach leads the shot put and discus program for high school student-athletes. This position is responsible for developing athletes’ technical skills, promoting sportsmanship, supporting academic success, and building a competitive and positive throwing program.

Requirements

  • Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Must be able to complete a criminal background check as well as an Indiana Department of Children's Services check.
  • Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
  • Must demonstrate foundational professionalism, including consistent attendance, punctuality, adherence to school policies and procedures, and strong employability skills. These are considered essential, non-negotiable expectations of the role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a throwing coach at the high school or college level is preferred.
  • Individuals with shot put and/or discus experience should also apply if interested in the position.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and run practices for shot put and discuss
  • Assesses a player's skills and abilities.
  • Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Supervise and mentor assistant coaches (if applicable)
  • Observes players during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Determines game strategy based on athletes capabilities.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Organizes and attends the fundraising dates that are available for the athletics program.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal & Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator.
  • Attends any required coaches’ meetings, HPC all conference voting, and IHSAA meetings necessary to fulfill their responsibilities.
