About The Position

The Department of Medicine has an opening for a health services researcher to serve as the Head of the Division of Health Care Policy and Research. The Division Head is responsible for providing leadership toward achievement of the highest level of excellence across the full program, including the development and execution of the Division’s research programs, educational activities, and supporting the Department’s clinical mission. The Division Head is responsible for maintaining a professional environment that facilitates creativity, innovation, and equity, and is also responsible for the professional health and wellness of their faculty, trainees, and staff. The latter includes mentoring junior faculty and fellows, supporting Department quality improvement initiatives, and integrating health services research methods and expertise in the Department and across the campus’ translational research programs.

  • A national/international reputation for personal academic accomplishments - A record of outstanding credentials, academic accomplishments within health services research, and the experience and national reputation necessary to sustain the history of excellence within the Division. A history of federally funded health services or translational research or experience with large, multicenter pragmatic trials or outcomes research is desirable. A record of recruiting, developing, and retaining health services research investigators is crucial.
  • Healthcare administrative leadership - Accomplished administrative leadership experience in a complex academic institution. Knowledge of the financial complexities, payer models, and associated reimbursement in providing high-quality, cost-effective specialty healthcare. Because the DOM values diversity and inclusion, the ideal candidate will have some experience working with diverse populations (race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, etc.) and will ideally have developed or participated in programs to address inequities and injustices to under-served populations.

  • Leading people - The incoming Division Head should possess the requisite leadership skills to take the Division of Health Care Policy and Research to the next level of academic and clinical excellence. The Division Head will demonstrate an ability to build and lead cohesive, high-performing teams focused on achieving optimal research outcomes by: o Displaying the vision and energy to build a strong, research-intensive faculty. o Communicating openly while encouraging constructive debate to manage projects, solve problems, and discuss challenging issues. o Establishing clear, challenging, and metrics-based performance goals for individuals and securing and deploying resources to meet these goals. o Reviewing the Division’s vision, plans, and activities while adjusting to meet evolving expectations of academic and research partners and institutional goals.
  • Collaborating and influencing - The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and transparent communication skills, as well as the ability to successfully engage, unify, build, and sustain relationships with diverse constituents (e.g., Dean, chairs, faculty, staff, hospital administration, residents, community stakeholders, and other external representatives). They will have a track record of forging collaborations across different groups to advance the reputation of the Division. The candidate will demonstrate this by: o Facilitating discussions that enable people to collaborate, promoting collaboration across multiple parties through a transparent and action-oriented leadership style. o Identifying and meeting with key stakeholders to help them shape a consensus collectively, compromising as necessary for results. o Developing an explicit understanding of which relationships are most important to the organization and nurturing them.
  • Operational excellence - The successful candidate will possess a record of overseeing an operation in a fiscally prudent manner. Therefore, they will: o Demonstrate experience in making balanced, fair, and appropriate decisions. o Have an appreciation of and ability to balance the fiscal pressures facing the division and to recognize the long-term trends in health care that are occurring at a policy level throughout the healthcare environment. o Possesses experience in pursuits to support programmatic development. o Have a history of running an operationally strong and financially solid operation.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the highest quality and national visibility of the Division’s research, other scholarly/academic activities, and community outreach programs.
  • Promote the Departmental priorities of interdisciplinary program development, career development, diversity of its workforce, and integrated program development with its affiliates.
  • Assure the mentorship of trainees and faculty with the goals of career development and progression toward promotion.
  • Recruit, retain, and academically develop faculty in the Division.
  • Conduct annual reviews of individual faculty members and staff that also include assessing employee satisfaction and engagement, and prepare written performance reviews on at least an annual basis.
  • Responsibly manage all fiscal aspects of the Division and maintain a fiscally independent and sustainable Division, including appropriate stewardship and involvement with philanthropic fund raising.
  • Personally participate in regularly scheduled meetings of the Department of Medicine’s Division Heads and other ad hoc Departmental meetings.
  • Work positively and collaboratively with the Adult and Child Center for Outcomes Research and Delivery Science (ACCORDS), the Farley Health Policy Center, the Center for Bioethics and Humanities, the Colorado Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the School of Medicine and Anschutz Medical campus leadership to foster the growth and development of the multiple missions of the Division.
  • Support, develop, and provide leadership for health services and pragmatic research initiatives and innovation within the department, school, and the healthcare system.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work with diverse students, fellows, and colleagues, and mentor diverse students and junior colleagues.
  • Have the opportunity to develop and implement new programs that address the research, learning health system, and implementation science skills required to facilitate the implementation of innovations to improve care and value in academic medicine
  • Develop performance metrics for faculty.
  • Support the Anschutz health services research community through education and consultation.
