About The Position

Shriners Children's Greenville has an opportunity for a full time Health Unit Coordinator I position. This position is schedule for 36 hours per week. This role functions as a secretary / receptionist and performs a variety of clerical duties in a patient care area. Responsible for handling traffic and telephone calls at the nursing station. Schedules tests and processes appropriate forms as ordered by the clinical staff. Maintains cleanliness and order at the nursing station. Performance is reflective of the mission, vision and core values of SHC. Manages activities at Nursing desk, including phone, call system, and Central Monitoring system. Provides support to nursing staff, patients and families; escorting patients, transporting specimens and re-stocking kitchen and break room.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • One year of administrative/computer skills
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 3 months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and prioritizes workload minimizing/eliminating undue delays, backlogs, or disorder.
  • Maintains adequate supply of all PET's and forms for the Unit.
  • Prepares 3 x 5 cards, labels for medication drawers, doors, beds and chart carousel for all patients..
  • Assures nursing station is orderly, clean and neat.
  • Cleans medical record charts as needed.
  • Ensures information on white boards is continuously updated.
  • Keeps Philips Central Monitor System updated with admissions and discharges.
  • Updates bed board to maintain current bed availability.
  • Re-stocks kitchen and break room.
  • Answers telephone promptly and with a professional and courteous voice.
  • Operates telephone system, retrieves voicemail messages, operates patient call system, and paging system correctly.
  • Takes telephone messages when appropriate to eliminate interruptions to patient care.
  • Demonstrates accurate data entry skills.
  • Checks email and prints an updated surgery schedule.
  • Supports Utilization Review by checking that encounter order matches check-in.
  • Also, checks that Surgical Admissions all have a post-op order for level of care change, and that OPS patients have an order for "Assign to Observation" or "Admit to Inpatient" prior to changing the encounter type.
  • Ensures integrity of the medical record.
  • Prepares paperwork, charts and records for admission, surgery, discharge and or transfer.
  • Maintains charts in proper orders.
  • Assures that copies placed in charts are legible.
  • Maintains charts to be used in SHCIS downtime.
  • Thins charts as appropriate.
  • Consults with Medical Record Department when charts need repair.
  • Maintains HIPAA for the Medical record.
  • Distributes and receives mail/messages in an accurate and timely manner on a daily basis.
  • Relates messages in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Orders supplies as needed.
  • Updates the whiteboard throughout the shift.
  • Uses appropriate forms and procedures for ordering or scheduling tests, i.e., lab, x-ray, consults and appointments.
  • Arranges inside and outside appointments appropriately.
