About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Hauler position is responsible for the pick-up and delivery of heavy construction equipment at customer sites and other job locations in a manner that reflects the University’s vision of working as “One Professional Team.” This position is responsible for maintaining proper paperwork and ensuring a professional appearance with all vehicles/equipment, in addition to being accountable for basic operational instruction to customers on the safe operation of all equipment and hauling larger loads for special projects when a CDL class dump truck is required and required to be in a CDL class A dump with plow and spreader during snow emergency. Coordinating delivery and pick-up schedules and verifying repairs. May be required to respond to emergency calls as needed for the best interest of the University. This position involves driving and managing deliveries and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with at least 10 years of job-related experience in equipment hauling, preventative maintenance, and semi-skilled experience in the service and repair of equipment.
  • 5+ years of lift, small equipment, and heavy equipment operation.
  • Must have decent computer skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Great Organizational Skills are a must.
  • A valid state driver's license is required.
  • Must have a current Class A CDL (Class A) with a clean driving record.
  • Manual Transmission, double and triple trailer, and tanker endorsements
  • Knowledge of road safety regulations and best practices in transportation.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer service and team collaboration.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends when required.
  • Knowledge of Air Brake Systems.
  • Knowledge of available equipment and its proper use
  • Knowledge of Ground pressures and safe practices for such
  • Proficient in OSHA Safety Standards and Liberty University Safety Standards
  • Ability and competency to Load and Tie down various types of hauls to meet DOT standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of operations of medium and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Adequate computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Convert limited verbal and written directions to other documents related to job scope and responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with the LU campus, facilities, applicable policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills are a must.
  • Follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Problem-Solving Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

  • Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required, must be able to pass all requirements to be on Liberty University insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Determining the total weight & size requirements, gross combination weight, axel loading, components, and load size.
  • Responsible for delivering, loading & unloading a variety of equipment and handling equipment and cargo safely while meeting rigging requirements, securing designated loading zones, and confirming accessible delivery locations. (e.g., flatbeds, tankers, or multi-axle trucks).
  • Deliver equipment/vehicles to vendors for repair as needed
  • Ensure timely deliveries, managing tight schedules while maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Planning your route, terrain type, road condition, and permit acquisition if required.
  • Hauling larger loads for special projects when a larger CDL class dump truck is required.
  • Required to be in a CDL class dump with plow and spreader during snow emergency
  • Coordinate with University personnel.
  • Inspects mechanical, electrical, and other defects on university equipment (Equipment includes, but is not limited to, University assets such as heavy equipment, dump trucks, trailers, bulldozers, telehandlers, Boom lifts, etc.
  • Inspect hydraulic systems on multiple types of equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain records of accurate logs of driving hours, fuel consumption, and vehicle conditions. As well as repairs made, work orders, and time worked through departmentally approved means.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions regarding the use of equipment.
  • Conducts daily pre-op and post-trip vehicle inspections as required.
  • Report any accidents, delays, or issues immediately to management.
  • Ensures the entire vehicle is clean and meets professional standards
  • Ensures vehicle is ready for next-day business, including fuel fills and pre-loads, whenever possible.
  • Ensure timely deliveries, managing tight schedules while maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Routinely deliver repaired equipment from Transportation to assigned department.
  • Transport equipment using proper tie-down methods that meet DOT standards.
  • Coordinate with departments on locations for drop-offs, pickups, and time frames
  • Respond to emergency needs of the University
  • Inspect all equipment for damage at the time of pick up. Document findings and submit damage information to the construction equipment manager upon return to the shop.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure safety compliance and report any issues promptly.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment to ensure safe conditions, including daily inspections of tires, lights, signals, glass, etc. Vehicle fluids and tire air pressures must be checked and serviced daily
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations regarding transportation and safety. Must follow departmental approved method of documentation.
  • Must be able to communicate service and repair problems and procedures with the operator and Manager.
  • Required to meet the criteria to receive a university p card.
  • Understands and complies with DOT Federal Motor Carrier regulations
  • Shall enhance the organization's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments, such as participation in various pre-op projects and presentations assigned by management.
  • Be able to move 53’ trailers with the Road Tractor as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
