About The Position

The High School Health/Physical Education (PE) Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education lessons to students in grades 9-12. The teacher will create a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field.
  • Valid Michigan secondary teaching certification in Health and Physical Education (i.e., MX or MC or MA/MB).
  • Strong knowledge of physical education principles and practices.
  • Willing to obtain necessary certification for Michigan Health Educators.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency in using technology for teaching and assessment.
  • Ability to demonstrate physical activities and fitness exercises.
  • Capability to stand, walk, and participate in physical activities for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certification preferred
  • Previous experience teaching high school students is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lesson Planning and Delivery: Develop and implement a comprehensive PE curriculum that aligns with state and national standards.
  • Design and deliver dynamic and varied lessons that cater to diverse learning styles and physical abilities.
  • Incorporate a variety of physical activities, including team sports, individual exercises, and fitness routines.
  • Classroom Management: Establish and maintain a safe and respectful classroom environment.
  • Manage student behavior effectively, promoting positive interactions and resolving conflicts as needed.
  • Ensure students adhere to safety rules and proper use of equipment.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Assess students’ physical abilities, skills, and progress through formal and informal methods.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students to encourage improvement and development.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and report progress to parents and guardians.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work collaboratively with colleagues, including other PE teachers, classroom teachers, and school staff.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, providing updates on student progress and addressing any concerns.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development opportunities, and school events.
  • Professional Growth: Stay current with best practices in physical education through continuous professional development.
  • Reflect on teaching practices and seek feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Support school-wide physical activity initiatives and health programs.
