About The Position

Highway Maintenance Technician I – District Five / Orlando Operations This position will use a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision. Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites. Requirements

  • Ability to: Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to: Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to: Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to: Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to: Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to: Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to: Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to: Stand for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to: Perform minor maintenance on vehicles.
  • Ability to: Operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • This position requires a Class E driver’s license.
  • This position requires a valid Class “E” driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
