About The Position

The Histology Lab Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the Grossing and Histology laboratory sections. This individual will be responsible for ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow, meeting department turnaround times, maintaining high standards of quality, managing personnel, and ensuring compliance with business and regulatory standards. The supervisor will work closely with pathologists, laboratory technicians, and other laboratory professionals, and support colleagues to meet these goals.

Requirements

  • Degree required; HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) required; HTL preferred.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience in diagnostic histology and 5+ years of total experience in diagnostic histology.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and general office phone/fax machines; familiar with LIS/AP workflows, barcoding, specimen tracking, and QA trending.
  • Regulatory knowledge: familiarity with CLIA, CAP, OSHA requirements strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all histology processes: grossing, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, scanning, and case assignment.
  • Own histology quality systems: implement/monitor QC/QA and applicable QMS programs.
  • Manage people operations: onboarding, training plans/cross-training, annual competencies, performance management, and scheduling to meet TAT.
  • Maintain operations: inventory, equipment maintenance, contribute to budgeting and prioritization for equipment purchasing/replacement, workstation organization, and wet tissue storage/disposal per retention and EH&S policies.
  • Lead troubleshooting; develop team troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Enforce safety policies: formalin/chemical safety, PPE, ventilation, spill response, exposure monitoring, waste handling, biosafety/sharps.
  • Drive SOP excellence: create and update department SOPs and close gaps in collaboration with medical team and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Track performance: monitor KPIs, report productivity/efficiency, implement corrective actions.
  • Support interfaces with accessioning department to ensure smooth sample handoffs and training alignment.
  • Working supervisor with physical presence on the lab floor ≥80% of working hours (workstation available on lab floor) for immediate colleague support, troubleshooting, and identification of workflow improvement opportunities.
  • Fully proficient and able to flex to bench work as needed.
  • Foster a collaborative, learning-focused culture; ensure clear communication across lab leaders, pathologists, and staff.
  • Set expectations, deliver feedback, address conflicts promptly, uphold SOPs/policies, and recognize achievements.
