About The Position

Performs routine laboratory tasks following clearly defined criteria within the Histology Pathology and Clinical laboratories with minimal supervision, accessioning specimens, preparing for the grossing procedure, maintaining supplies, handling reports and billing, providing support for pathologist and physician offices and providing frontline customer service. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. (required)
  • None required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and computers.
  • Must be capable of operating Histology instrumentation.
  • Must be able to use office equipment such as telephones, fax machines, computer terminals, etc.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of work related information.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for specimen accessioning, processing, staining techniques, frozen section assistance, etc. to ensure the results meet the Lab definition of quality.
  • Verifies patient ID and specimen source, assists with grossing, prepares slide labels, maintain accessioning logs, preps non-gyn specimens and stains slides, files slides and blocks, follow procedures for disposing of tissue specimens and assists with bone marrow biopsies.
  • Responsible for proper operation, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments to enable test results to be timely and accurate.
  • Cleans cryostate, Uses Laboratory and Pathology information systems to process specimens, locate patient results, pull previous results from Anatrol, enter clinical data and pathology billing.
  • Generates daily log, prints reports using APR, pulls collection lists and accounts for specimens.
  • Communicates information to supervisor/pathologist, co-workers or students, laboratory staff on other shifts, outside departments – accurately, timely, clearly, and professionally concerning specimen handling and delivery, scheduling or problems.
  • Responds to requests for reports, slides and/or blocks in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Checks accuracy of and distributes final reports.
  • Fills physician office requests for forms and supplies.
  • Is aware of and follows laboratory and hospital policies/procedures.
  • Informs Supervisor of issues or problems involving laboratory or hospital safety.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Is knowledgeable of and follows regulations pertaining to medical necessity and billing as applicable to the job.
  • Completes all mandatory education and participates in available continuing education programs.
  • Works to meet department Performance Improvement Goals.
