About The Position

The Uhealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full time Histotechnician in the UTower hospital. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Histotechnician performs routine clinical laboratory tests and procedures under the supervision of a licensed Medical Technologist or Laboratory Supervisor. This role focuses on standardized testing and analytical procedures in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, immunology, or microbiology, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of results to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Current Florida license as a Medical Technician
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  • Associate’s degree in relevant field
  • Florida State License as a Histotechnician

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, using a microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities and diseases.
  • Enters findings into the appropriate database.
  • Sets up, adjusts, maintains, and cleans medical laboratory equipment.
  • Analyzes the results of tests and experiments to ensure conformity to specifications using special mechanical and electrical devices.
  • Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes and performs blood counts.
  • Obtains specimens, and cultivates, isolates, and identifies microorganisms for analysis.
  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area and ensures compliance with infection control and safety procedures.
  • Documents maintenance, QC, and test results per laboratory policy and regulatory standards.
  • Records and reports test results accurately, referring to abnormal or critical values.
  • Consults with a pathologist to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are found.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Assist in changing tissue processor solutions following written procedures.
  • Observe and document processing schedules.
  • Monitor paraffin levels and temperatures; report discrepancies to senior staff.
  • Embed tissues with attention to orientation under supervision.
  • Organize blocks numerically and ensure completeness.
  • Cut routine sections at designated micron thickness under guidance.
  • Identify basic artifacts such as folds or tears and correct with supervision.
  • Maintain water bath and ensure proper temperature.
  • Assist with labeling and tracking frozen specimens.
  • Learn proper orientation and cutting techniques for frozen tissue.
  • Ensure patient identifiers match documentation.
  • Follow all written procedures as stated in the Anatomic Pathology Procedure Manual.
  • Report deviations or concerns to supervisory staff.
