About The Position

The Histotechnologist is responsible for the preparation and processing of tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologists. This role performs a variety of laboratory procedures including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining in accordance with established protocols, regulatory standards, and quality control requirements. The Histotechnologist plays a critical role in supporting accurate diagnostic outcomes within our pathology laboratory.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Histotechnology, Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field required
  • Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification through ASCP Board of Certification required (or eligible with completion within 12 months of hire)
  • Current Florida license or ability to obtain Florida licensure as required
  • Minimum 1 year of histology laboratory experience preferred; new graduates with HT/HTL certification will be considered

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with automated tissue processors, automated stainers, and cryostat preferred
  • Experience with IHC staining techniques is a plus
  • Familiarity with LIS (Laboratory Information System) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Receive, accession, and track tissue specimens to maintain chain of custody and specimen integrity
  • Process tissue specimens through automated tissue processors following established protocols
  • Embed processed tissue in paraffin wax for sectioning
  • Cut tissue sections using a rotary microtome to produce slides of required thickness (typically 3–5 microns)
  • Perform routine and special staining procedures including H&E, PAS, AFB, GMS, Trichrome, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) stains
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment (tissue processors, microtomes, automated stainers, cover slippers)
  • Maintain accurate records of specimen processing, staining logs, and quality control results
  • Perform and document quality control procedures per laboratory and CAP/CLIA standards
  • Prepare and maintain reagents, staining solutions, and supplies in accordance with safety and quality guidelines
  • Adhere to all safety protocols including proper handling of hazardous chemicals, biohazardous materials, and sharps
  • Assist pathologists and pathologist assistants as needed with gross examination support
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with specimens, staining, or equipment and escalate as appropriate
  • Participate in laboratory inspections, accreditation activities, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory workspace
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Lab Manager or Lead Histotechnologist
