About The Position

Daniel Stowe Conservancy (Stowe) inspires a love of nature and its beauty through unforgettable outdoor experiences. The nearly 400 acres of Stowe provides visitors with a chance to reconnect with nature in all seasons. The property welcomes guests to spectacular gardens, a conservatory dedicated to the display of tropical plants and orchids, sparkling fountains, nearly 6 miles of trails and a dog park. The Horticulture Intern provides ongoing support to the Horticulture Department with the successful execution of the maintenance and care of all Garden plant life. The Horticulture Intern works closely with staff Horticulturists and volunteers to help perform all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance. An ideal candidate will have an interest in horticulture or landscape maintenance and be able to work outside alongside horticulturists and independently under their direction.

Requirements

  • Exhibits a passion for the mission of Daniel Stowe Conservancy.
  • Successful pass of a standard background review.
  • Must be willing to wear a uniform and work outside as needed.
  • Available to work nights and weekends to support garden events.
  • Must be willing to serve all guests equally regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, marital status, disability, status, genetic information, gender identity, and/or sexual orientation.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of programs at the most rigorous level.
  • May experience exposure to extended periods of sun, rain, cold temperatures, wind, water, and potentially uneven terrain that may contain trip hazards.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Regular walking, lifting, twisting, crawling, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, squatting, and kneeling.

Nice To Haves

  • Pursuing a degree in a relevant field (landscape architecture, horticulture, environmental science, etc.).
  • Preferred, but not required, coursework or experience in a related field.
  • Experience with running power tools such as mowers and string line trimmers.
  • Comfortable working autonomously as well as working in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supports Garden Managers and Horticulturists with plant and landscape care, typical activities include using hand tools and operating outdoor power equipment for weeding, mulching, watering, planting, pruning, mowing, string line trimming, and leaf blowing.
