Requirements

  • Previous experience as a cook in a professional kitchen, preferably in a senior living or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and dietary requirements for the elderly population.
  • Understanding of food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with residents, team members, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform tasks that require physical stamina, such as lifting heavy pots, pans, and kitchen equipment.
  • Manual dexterity to handle and manipulate kitchen tools, utensils, and equipment.
  • Agility and flexibility to move quickly and safely within the kitchen environment.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Culinary training or certification is desirable but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook meals in accordance with approved menus, ensuring that all meals are appealing, well-balanced, and meet specific dietary requirements of the residents.
  • Adhere to portion control standards to ensure consistency and minimize food waste.
  • Modify recipes as necessary to accommodate residents with special dietary needs or restrictions, such as low-sodium, diabetic-friendly, or pureed diets.
  • Monitor food quality and presentation, ensuring that meals are visually appealing and appetizing.
  • Kitchen Organization and Sanitation: Maintain a clean and organized kitchen workspace, following proper food handling and sanitation guidelines to ensure food safety.
  • Ensure that all kitchen equipment is clean and in good working order.
  • Regularly inspect and rotate food supplies to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
  • Assist in inventory management, including monitoring stock levels, placing orders, and receiving deliveries.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with the dietary team to plan menus and discuss resident feedback and preferences.
  • Communicate effectively with residents, taking into consideration their individual needs and preferences.
  • Work cooperatively with other kitchen staff, such as servers and dishwashers, to ensure smooth meal service and overall kitchen efficiency.
