About The Position

The Housing Specialist assures housing readiness of clients by implementing appropriate trainings and developing permanent housing options in both public and private sectors. Empower Residence is a 24/7 transitional housing program for women, operating under HRA/DSS guidelines. As an enhanced shelter, we support residents facing challenges such as mental health needs, substance use, unemployment, and poverty. Requirements

  • Associate's degree or 60 college credits courses in Human Services field or High School Diploma or GED with 2 years of related experience in shelter services for low-income and/or homeless population.
  • Knowledge of federal guidelines for public and private low-income housing required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A clean and valid driver's license is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct housing eligibility assessments of all applicable clients.
  • Develop linkages with real estate companies and office of public housing.
  • Counsel residents on rent arrears, credit and criminal background checks, NYCHA & current available city subsidies, supportive housing, DGS regulations and related obstacles to securing permanent housing.
  • Maintain and update listings of permanent affordable housing.
  • Develop and facilitate client workshops and individual sessions on skills and information necessary to acquire and maintain independent permanent housing.
  • Track placements and conduct follow up of clients placed into permanent housing.
