About The Position

RTX BBN Technologies, a noted high-tech research & development company, seeks a creative self-starter that is organized, hands-on, and people-centered to fill the role of Hardware Systems Developer in our Physical Sciences & Systems business unit. This position is for a multi-functional professional in the field of electro-mechanical engineering to support the design, physical fabrication and assembly, process development, and technical evaluation of systems ranging in maturity from conceptual to high TRL products. The ideal candidate will possess a proven background in mechanical and/or electrical design, hands-on integration and evaluation, and a robust methodology for performing organized and traceable iterative design and evaluation cycles. A successful individual possesses the ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively within a small development team to identify, prioritize, and execute tasks that align with project objectives. Project topics include, but are not limited to, unmanned platforms, complex sensing and data collection systems, and embedded computing devices. The candidate shall have the aptitude to manage and track multiple parallel technical activities. This is an on-site position, but offers the ability to work one day of the week remotely.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and 2 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret US DoD security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a hands-on electro-mechanical system developer
  • Analyze system requirements and objectives, determine and document approaches to satisfy, and perform tasks to fulfill
  • Develop and analyze designs using computer modeling tools (e.g. Solidworks, Matlab, Ansys)
  • Work within BBN’s maker space to: Fabricate, assemble, and test mechanical components to include custom machined, 3D printed, and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts
  • Fabricate, assemble, and test electrical components which may necessitate wiring and light soldering
  • Develop and execute a range of processes and procedures including fab/assembly (i.e. work instructions), component and system level testing, and failure/troubleshooting analysis for prototype and production systems
  • Produce and maintain technical metric tracking documents such as Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) spreadsheets
  • Produce and maintain documentation such as drawings, schematics, BOMs, reports, and manuals
  • Independently perform market and scientific database research to inform design approaches
  • Interface and collaborate with internal and external scientists, engineers, and program management
  • Communicate through oral presentations and written reports on program status, issues and success
  • This position will require some domestic travel (up to 10%)
