About The Position

The Indirect Tax Analyst supports U.S. indirect tax compliance activities, including sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, and annual reports. The role prepares workpapers and filing packages using SAP and tax systems, maintains compliance calendars and documentation, and assists with audits and tax notices under the direction of the Sr. Manager Indirect Tax. The position also contributes to process improvements and system enhancements, including a planned sales tax engine upgrade. Why Messer? Requirements

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, especially Excel skills including pivot tables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, and related functions.
  • Ability to extract, organize, and analyze transactional and master data from SAP and tax systems (Vertex, PTMS) to support compliance workpapers and reconciliations.
  • Leverages data analytics, automation, and emerging technologies (including AI) to improve indirect tax compliance efficiency, data accuracy, and system processes.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and quality orientation.
  • Effective time management and ability to manage multiple deadlines in a calendar-driven environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate across functions.
  • Ability to follow documented procedures and internal controls; continuous improvement mindset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to Vertex (O Series/Returns/Q Series), PTMS, or other indirect tax software and/or ERP software.
  • Prior internship/co-op experience in accounting, tax, AP/AR, shared services, or compliance roles.
  • Familiarity with exemption certificate processes and indirect tax documentation practices.
  • Academic coursework or demonstrated interest in taxation and/or accounting principles.
  • Ability to work full-time in a professional hybrid environment and meet periodic peak workload deadlines (month/quarter/year-end and rendition seasons).
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience (indirect tax, accounting operations, audit, or similar).

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the accurate preparation and timely filing of business licenses, annual reports, personal property tax, and sales and use tax returns for multiple entities across various taxing jurisdictions with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain supporting documentation, compliance calendars, and tracking for filing deadlines and deliverables.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and consistency in indirect tax compliance.
  • Analyze data to identify indirect tax exemptions, credits, incentives, and overall indirect tax impacts related to capital projects and business initiatives.
  • Prepare tax incentive applications and manage associated ongoing compliance requirements.
  • Monitor pending and enacted tax legislation to assess potential impacts and opportunities.
  • Communicate with taxing authorities to resolve notices, inquiries, and discrepancies.
  • Assist with customer and vendor exemption certificate management.
  • Independently manages own administrative tasks and provides support to the team as needed.
  • Work with Accounts Receivable teams to support customer inquiries related to indirect tax billings.
  • Provides support for indirect tax audits, tax systems, and other departmental initiatives as needed including cross-functional collaboration.
