This position provides industrial hygiene consultative services to local/state agencies, schools, local health departments, the medical community, workplaces, and individuals. It includes anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and recommending controls for occupational and environmental health hazards. Hazardous exposures may include but not limited to chemical agents (dusts, fumes, gases and mists); and biological agents (fungi, Legionnaires Disease, bloodborne pathogens, and other animal/plant allergens and irritants). The Industrial Hygiene Consultant provides written and oral information to inform, educate, and empower people to address occupational and environmental health concerns in workplaces and homes. They may provide referrals or links to other agencies or resources as needed. They often conduct site visits to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and recommend control of occupational and environmental health hazards and prepare written reports. They may conduct literature reviews to keep up to date on state of the art regarding existing occupational and environmental health hazards as well as on emerging occupational and environmental health hazards. They conduct presentations to citizen groups, employees, professional groups, local health departments and other groups about such hazards. They also develop and publish written or electronic materials to inform, alert and enable government agencies, schools. local health departments, the medical community, businesses and individuals about potential occupational and environmental health hazards and methods to reduce exposures to such hazards. The Industrial Hygiene Consultant must be able to communicate data, reports, recommendations, and technical information in a manner that is understandable and appropriate for the intended audience(s) to inform people about potential hazards and enable them to decrease exposure to occupational and environmental health hazards.
