S&ME is seeking a motivated and passionate Industrial Hygiene Technician to join our Industrial Hygiene team in Charleston, South Carolina. What You Will Do: As an Industrial Hygiene Technician-whether early in your career or an experienced professional-you will perform hazardous building material inspections and surveys, with a focus on asbestos, lead-based paint, and indoor air quality issues such as mold. Duties may include conducting air monitoring during renovation and demolition activities, preparing documentation and reports, maintaining and calibrating instruments, and supporting quality assurance efforts. Based on your experience level, you may work under supervision, handle assignments independently, or take on leadership responsibilities for larger, more complex projects. This role provides a strong opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills in industrial hygiene and environmental health.

Requirements

  • All Experience Levels:
  • Associate Technician: just starting out
  • Technician I: 1+ years of relevant experience, OR equivalent experience, with an associate degree in a related field
  • Technician II: 3+ years of relevant experience, OR equivalent experience, with an associate degree in a related field
  • Technician III: 5+ years of relevant experience. Experience in overseeing and mentoring junior staff, a plus
  • Education: An Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, a plus
  • Industry-related certifications:
  • Asbestos Air Monitor and/or Asbestos Inspector accreditation
  • Asbestos Air Monitor and/or Asbestos Inspector
  • Lead Inspector or Risk Assessor
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40hr
  • Key Competencies:
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • Adequate mechanical/equipment operation skills necessary to calibrate and adjust a light microscope
  • Effective math skills necessary to perform asbestos sample analysis
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise

Responsibilities

  • Hazardous Materials Surveys: Conduct or support inspections for asbestos, lead-based paint, and other hazardous building materials, ensuring all work meets applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Air Monitoring and Sampling: Perform required air monitoring during renovation and demolition activities, including personal and area exposure evaluations.
  • Reporting and Recordkeeping: Complete clear and accurate field documentation and client reports, from routine summaries to more detailed technical analysis based on experience.
  • Equipment Care and Calibration: Inspect, calibrate, and maintain monitoring instruments to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality assurance standards.
  • Project Collaboration and Quality Assurance: Work closely with project managers and team members, contribute to quality programs, and, at higher experience levels, help coordinate teams and support larger, more complex projects.
