About The Position

The informatics specialist is an expert clinician that has a strong foundation in utilization of an electronic health record in practice and a responsibility for ensuring an environment of safe quality care. The informatics specialist demonstrates an advanced level of policy and clinical knowledge, sound clinical judgment and competency, technical competency with clinical information system applications and workflows, professionalism as it relates to interpersonal and general communication skills, experience in supporting the policies and workflows surrounding timely and compliant documentation, and takes responsibility for ongoing professional development, current practice trends and competency validation. This position will support University of Iowa Health Care based departments and staff. This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Typically, 3-5 years of experience (within the last 5 years) in a clinical role in a complex health care environment such as a large medical center or teaching hospital.
  • Typically, 1-3 years of experience (within the last 5 years) contributing to a clinical information system implementation cycle in areas such as design, workflow analysis, build, training, implementation and support in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
  • Ability to lead change in a complex academic healthcare environment and promote the understanding and effective use of information technology across departments.
  • Experience authoring training materials and leading training sessions in a variety of formats.
  • Excellent communication skills at the verbal, written and presentation level. Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products (such as Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, OneNote).
  • Experience working independently with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa, or equivalent for clinical profession.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to the work/academic environment

  • Experience using Epic in an ambulatory or hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Works within clinics and inpatient units to identify and prioritize areas of greatest need through collaboration with nurses, unit staff and clinical leaders and HCIS reporting tools.
  • Guides clinical staff (providers, nursing personnel, and clerical staff) with translation of clinical practice into electronic health information systems to improvement efficiencies. Tasks may include many aspects of the EHR such as creation of new orders, set-up of order sets, Smart Tools, note templates, clinical decision support, questionnaires, etc., requiring knowledge of both Epic applications and clinical workflows.
  • Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to situations.
  • Translates clinical requirements into system design and workflow customization, data collection, and database builds.
  • Guides content build and assists technical staff in the creation and customization of applications.
  • Develops sample input data, and tests system changes for usability, performance, and adherence to standards. Verifies results with clinicians and IT project managers.
  • Obtains and maintains Epic certification(s)
  • Serves as a clinical liaison supporting communication among technical staff, clinicians, and vendors to identify and track installation issues, troubleshoot, resolve problems, and address concerns.
  • Maintains documentation on assigned project requirements and design decision.
  • Provides one-on-one and small group demonstrations and go-live support.
  • Mentor staff and student employees in areas of expertise
  • Communicates effectively with technical and non-technical staff at verbal, written and presentation level.
  • Knowledge of the organization's industry group, trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations, and trendsetters; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to situations.
  • Research and recommend incorporation of new functionality into clinical practice.
  • Collects and analyzes user feedback and identifies revisions and enhancements.
  • Mentor staff and student employees in areas of expertise
  • Identifies professional development opportunities and encourages continuous learning.
  • Ability to manage the successful and smooth transition from current to desired culture, practices, structure, and overall organizational environment.
