About The Position

The Instructional Design Consultant, General Education Bookends serves the Bookends and General Education programs within the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE). The Instructional Design Consultant will help lead and coordinate curriculum support - review, renewal, implementation, and assessment processes – for the Bookends and will serve as a consultant and support for the development of high priority courses within the General Education program. As a core member of the OUE Bookends team, the Instructional Design Consultant will provide and implement curricular and pedagogical best practices for accessible, multi-modal courses within the Bookends and the General Education program. The Instructional Design Consultant will develop and work in collaboration with Bookends team members and key stakeholders for the General Education program, supporting, creating, and promoting evidence-informed course materials and instructor training in alignment with university values, strategies, and policies. Provide curriculum expertise during the revision of Bookends courses to align the materials and approaches for in-person and online offerings with best practices in universal design; develop and implement modifications to support participation by students and instructors with accessibility needs and in response to assessment data; and consult with and provide professional development to faculty and staff on emerging areas of curriculum development and innovation. Support and inform curriculum and course assessment, especially through the development and integration of assessment tools within learning management systems; work with partners in the Drake Institute, Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (OTDI), Ohio State Online, and others as needed to develop iterations of Bookends courses suited for specific populations, campuses, or programs. Support and facilitate instructors in the assessment of Bookends courses and in the development of revisions to methods and materials in response to the outcome of assessment. Collaborate on alignment of Bookends course approaches with other university initiatives. Conduct and share research related to education trends, pedagogy and curriculum design, best practices, and maintenance. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • 6 years of relevant experience required in connecting educational pedagogy, learning theory, and universal design practices to curricular goals and the assignments and course activities that support those goals.
  • Experience using and developing evidence-based practices for course/curriculum design, teaching, and assessment, including both ideation and implementation of change into course structures and assignments across multiple modalities.
  • Experience with programs to support and improve teaching and student learning.
  • Extensive experience with educational technologies, especially learning management systems.
  • A record of successful teaching consultation at the college or university level.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Familiarity with the teaching and learning environment at a large research university.

  • 8-12 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate, collaborate, and inspire professional groups and teams.
  • Experience with strategic planning/visioning.
  • Experience with large enrollment, centrally-managed courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, long-term projects.
  • Familiarity with the Ohio State University context and with Canvas-based learning management platforms.
