About The Position

Montgomery College, Rockville campus, is seeking a full-time Biology faculty member to fill a position starting August 2026. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated educator who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. Important qualities expected in the candidate include strong verbal and written communication skills, experience working with students of different backgrounds, and commitment to the community college mission. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions like the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Washington University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the Universities at Shady Grove. Montgomery College has state-of-the art science facilities and equipment. MC’s science buildings are less than 15 years old. The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. The faculty member will primarily teach our Principles of Biology I, Microbiology, Principles of Genetics, and/or other courses as needed. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work, and utilizing instructional technology. The opportunity to teach honors students or student research is also supported and encouraged. Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, remote, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses and offers courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses and/or teaching online. Requirements

  • Master’ s in Biological Science, Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience in a two-year or four-year institution, including hands-on, lab-based instruction.
  • Understanding and commitment to student success, including increasing retention, transfer, and graduation.
  • Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Biological Science, Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of teaching experience at college level.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing or developing undergraduate research opportunities, including Biology Education Research.
  • Demonstrated experience using various teaching modalities (face-to-face, remote, blended/hybrid, and online).
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas) and technology.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching major-level courses such as general biology, genetics, microbiology, and cell biology.
  • Demonstrated experience using active-learning techniques to engage students in the classroom.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches non-major and major-level courses; teaching assignments expected to include Principles of Biology I (BIOL 150) and Principles of Genetics (BIOL 222). Opportunity may be available to teach other courses like Microbiology (BIOL 210).
  • Teaches at least 30 semester hours per academic year.
  • Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts; evaluates and grades students' exams, assignments, and papers; holds required office hours for students.
  • Teaches a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend and/or accelerated sections, compressed and online. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Engages students in their learning through active, collaborative learning approaches.
  • Incorporates the use of a learning management system (Blackboard Ultra) and other relevant technology into instruction.
  • Mentors students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students.
  • Advises students about program curriculum, transfer options to four-year institutions, and professional/career opportunities.
  • Serves on, or leads, department, discipline, campus and college committees.
  • Actively participates in professional development opportunities at the college as well as in professional organizations and activities.
  • Engages in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs, and learning outcomes with the goal of increasing student success.
