About The Position

High Point University’s School of Arts & Design invites applications for an Instructor of Visual Art (9-month, non-tenure track) with a specialization in Foundations. We seek a forward-thinking artist–educator who values fundamental skills, digital fluency, and engaging pedagogy who can help shape the first and second year experience for emerging artists and designers. This position centers on Foundations teaching, which forms the essential core of students’ artistic development. The successful candidate will contribute leadership, innovation, and energy to the Foundations curriculum, integrating traditional, digital, and conceptual approaches. Courses may include: Drawing 2D Design / Fundamentals of Design 3D Design Digital Foundations (Mac-based) Visual Literacy & Art Appreciation Candidates who emphasize critical thinking, cross-disciplinary connections, and contemporary practices within foundational instruction are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • MFA in Art (or equivalent terminal degree)
  • Demonstrated excellence in Foundations teaching
  • Experience teaching digital art courses (Mac-based)
  • Knowledgeable in Art History
  • Capacity to teach additional areas such as painting, life drawing, design, or digital media

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with evidence based pedagogy, first year student mentoring, and/or Foundations coordination
  • Active creative practice with a record of exhibitions, scholarship, or professional engagement
  • Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives across the School of Art & Design

Responsibilities

  • Teach Foundations courses and additional studio or lecture courses as needed
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and assessment of the Foundations curriculum as well as the Department as a whole
  • Integrate contemporary tools, materiality, and emerging technologies into Foundations instruction
  • Mentor undergraduate students, particularly during their transition from Foundations to advanced studio work
  • Maintain an active creative/scholarly practice
  • Participate in service to the program, including Department and committee work
