About The Position

This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for an Intermediate Substation Drafter for our Saint Louis, MO office. Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. Takes part in providing local technical drafting and CADD support on projects to produce drawings and documentation to be used for transmission and distribution infrastructure. Tasks may include generating CADD drawings on various assigned aspects of substation projects of basic to moderate scale and/or complexity. Generates accurate and concise drafting deliverables including plans and profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for drafting, accuracy, and functionality. Your Impact Assist with drafting tasks for substation projects, including physical and civil layout drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams, ensuring accuracy and adherence to client standards and project expectations. Use 3D computer‑aided design and drafting (CADD) software to prepare detailed substation drawings, including layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding plans, and electrical connections, based on engineering direction, markups, and established standards. Utilize specialized software such as Autodesk Raster Design and Bentley Descartes for drafting tasks, as well as the ProjectWise file management system for organizing and managing project files. Apply proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel to support drafting, documentation, and data‑entry tasks. Provide routine drafting assistance that accounts for proper illustration, fit, form, and function using geometric dimensioning, tolerance, and quantity calculations, ensuring constructability and maintainability according to design standards. Assist with reviewing drawings for accuracy and consistency, interpreting contract plans and specifications, identifying basic construction or engineering issues, and escalating discrepancies for appropriate resolution. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including engineers and designers, to execute substation project work and ensure drawings adhere to applicable codes, standards (such as IEEE and NESC), and federal and state regulations. Prepare multiple versions of substation drawings for review, incorporating markups and updates while ensuring compliance with contract requirements and drafting standards. Complete training on assigned tasks, including substation‑specific drafting standards, practices, and quality procedures. Exhibit basic knowledge of current drafting and design support practices applicable to high‑, extra‑high‑, and general substation environments. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior drafting and design support experience.
  • Experience in a substation design/drafting environment (control and/or physical design).
  • Familiar with drafting principles, practices, methods, and techniques specific to substation design.
  • Proficiency with CADD drafting tools and the ability to learn project-specific platforms.
  • Ability to interpret substation design markups and translate them into accurate drawings.
  • Familiar with relevant codes, standards (IEEE, NESC), compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements for substations.
  • Familiarity with typical substation equipment (e.g., breakers, switches, transformers, bus structures, grounding systems, and cable/conduit routing).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non‑technical audience.
  • Strong self‑leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in closely related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience with industry-standard CADD software (such as AutoCAD, MicroStation) for substation design.
  • Experience with ProjectWise and/or similar document management systems in a utility or consulting environment.
  • Experience with Autodesk Raster Design, Bentley Descartes, or similar tools for legacy drawing conversion and cleanup.
  • Familiarity with utility client standards and procedures for substation drafting.
  • Essential professional licensure/certification.
