About The Position

This intern will support the Inclusion and Community Engagement Department for the development of the project “Legendary Pathmakers: A salute to the foragers of the Black Arts Movement in Minnesota” in partnership with multi-disciplinary artist, PaviElle French. The project is a three-part short film series following the progression of pioneering Twin Cities musicians and performance artists as they share their journey of where they started to how they built a foundation for future generations. The intern will assist in archival research, securing visual assets for film, coordinating filming locations and schedules, communicating with filmmaker, film participants and community partners as needed.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.
  • Some experience doing archival research
  • Experience with community engagement and public participation projects
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings to attend community events, meetings, programs, or for filming production.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Interest in African American history and culture

  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or have graduated with a degree in the following areas: History, Archival Science / Library Science, Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia, Journalism, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, African American Studies, Film Studies / Media Production, Public History and Museum Studies
  • Preference given to applicants with experience working with BIPOC communities and/or other underrepresented communities

Responsibilities

  • Archival research of artists and significant events in the Black Arts Movement in Minnesota utilizing archives including but not limited to the Gale Family Library, University of Minnesota, Metro State University, Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, and artists’ personal archives
  • Coordinate with interview participants, filmmaker and community engagement staff on filming locations and filming schedules
  • Support community engagement staff in facilitation of filming dates by taking notes of interviews, setting up, cleaning up and other coordination as needed with film crew and filming locations
  • Communicate regularly with community engagement staff on project logistics and updates
  • Meet with MNHS staff and attend department meetings as needed.
