About The Position

The Strategy Intern will gain practical experience supporting Port Houston’s strategic planning and analysis efforts. Under the guidance of Strategy Department staff, the intern will assist with research, data collection, and reporting while learning about port operations, governance, and long-term planning in a public-sector setting.

Requirements

  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2026 graduates are not eligible unless enrolling in graduate program in Fall 2026
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, including strong verbal and listening skills.
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Punctuality is key.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours on a limited basis to better understand the 24-hour operational cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Strategy Department with research, data collection, and analysis related to Port Houston’s strategic initiatives and long-term planning efforts.
  • Assist in gathering, organizing, and analyzing data related to port operations, capital programs, market trends, and performance metrics.
  • Conduct research on industry trends, peer ports, economic impacts, and best practices to support strategic decision-making.
  • Help prepare materials for executive briefings, strategy sessions, and leadership presentations, including summaries, charts, and slide decks.
  • Assist with tracking progress on strategic initiatives, key performance indicators (KPIs), and departmental action plans.
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as Operations, Finance, Planning, Environmental Affairs, and Government Relations on cross-functional projects.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops, including note-taking and documentation of action items.
  • Maintain organized records, files, and reports related to strategic planning activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of Port Houston’s strategic objectives.
