Position Summary: The Facility Planning Intern will support Port Houston’s Facility Planning Department in advancing short- and long-term infrastructure planning initiatives across container, multipurpose, and landside facilities. The internship provides hands-on exposure to maritime infrastructure planning, terminal master planning, capital program development, and strategic facility analysis within one of the nation’s leading public port authorities. The intern will gain insight into how complex, multi-billion-dollar infrastructure programs are evaluated, prioritized, and developed to support regional and global trade.

Requirements

  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2026 graduates are not eligible unless enrolling in graduate program in Fall 2026
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Basic familiarity with engineering drawings or site plans preferred.

  • Demonstrated interest in infrastructure, logistics, transportation, or the maritime industry.
  • Professionalism, punctuality, and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with gathering and analyzing facility and operational data, including space utilization, cargo volumes, infrastructure capacity, and long-range development needs.
  • Support development of terminal master plans and long-range facility development strategies (10-30-year planning horizon).
  • Conduct research and assist in evaluating capital improvement projects, including preliminary scope definition, cost benchmarking, and schedule considerations.
  • Review drawings, site plans, and conceptual layouts to support planning analyses.
  • Prepare planning reports, executive briefing materials, and strategic presentations.
  • Track planning milestones, timelines, and key deliverables for assigned initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, consultants, and cross-functional teams to support planning initiatives and special projects.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings; assist with preparing meeting summaries and action items.
  • Attend site visits to container and multipurpose terminals to gain exposure to operational constraints and infrastructure considerations.
  • Gain exposure to environmental and permitting considerations, as well as coordination processes with federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Maintain planning documentation, files, and data repositories in accordance with department standards.
