About The Position

The NSF Ann Arbor Laboratory Internship aims to provide college students and other applicants with hands-on experience in a professional laboratory setting. The internship program will enable participants to develop their technical skills and gain practical experience in the field of analytical testing industry, specifically in the area of the laboratory testing industry known as Testing Inspection and Certification (TIC). Duration: The internship program will be offered during the summer semester, for a period of 8-12 weeks assigned to either the Milling and Molding, Materials, or Biosafety Cabinetry laboratories, while being exposed to all areas of the Ann Arbor Laboratories.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year science, engineering, or technical program
  • Must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Must have completed at least one semester of science course work preferably in chemistry, microbiology or engineering/mechanical courses
  • Must have basic knowledge of laboratory safety and procedures
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Follow instructions and behave in a respectful and professional manner

Responsibilities

  • Assisting laboratory staff in conducting tests and experiments
  • Preparing samples for analysis and running various analytical tests
  • Aseptic techniques, Preventative contamination procedures, sample identification and organization
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Analytical balances, CNC machines, Calipers, Load Frames, Ovens
  • Recording and analyzing experimental data
  • Supporting laboratory staff in activities such as ordering supplies, sample management, data review/archival, laboratory maintenance
  • Chemical inventories, Instrument cataloging, 6s (Laboratory Safety)
