About The Position

Responsible for learning all areas of general cargo administration, including vessel operations, cargo staging both in the transit sheds and open laydown areas, an understanding of Tariff 8 and our lease agreements, truck office procedures, safety, statistical data collection and analysis. This position will work closely with many departments within Port Houston and will observe the relationship of many of its stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2026 graduates are not eligible unless enrolling in graduate program in Fall 2026
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established ten to twelve-week (10-12) program dates
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, including strong verbal and listening skills.
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Punctuality.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with each manager and supervisor within the General Cargo group and assist with vessel scheduling, cargo placement, traffic control, and communicate with stevedores and tenants.
  • Assist with rail staging at the North Side Turning Basin.
  • Become familiar with Navis N4.
  • Assist with cargo staging at 32A/33A.
  • Review and comprehend monthly statistical reports.
  • Attend PHA Commission meeting to understand the procurement and formal process of decision making.
  • Interface with truck drivers to assist locating their final destination and safety.
  • Attend internal and external meetings to gain a better understanding of the maritime industry.
