About The Position

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety internship program honors Paul C. Petrillo, the Foundation's long-serving chairman of the board. A civil and traffic engineer with degrees from Purdue and Yale Universities, Petrillo served the AAA Foundation for 35 years as a trustee and a champion of the organization's mission to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities and improve traffic safety. The AAA Foundation summer internship program offers graduate students hands-on learning opportunities to support Foundation research projects under the guidance of its technical staff. Internship Summary: Under the direction of the Group Leaders as well as the Senior-Level Research Associates, the student interns will assist in carrying out traffic safety research in areas related to (1) emerging technologies, (2) vulnerable road users, (3) driver behavior and performance, and (4) roadway systems and drivers. The student interns will be directly involved in ongoing AAA Foundation research projects, perform analytical tasks on specific traffic safety issues, and document findings.

Requirements

  • Working towards a Master's or Doctoral degree in a field aligned to traffic safety research, such as Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Public Health, Epidemiology, Data Science, Statistics, or Social Sciences.
  • Knowledge and background in one or more areas of traffic safety.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using data analysis software and /or computer simulation tools, including driving simulation and virtual reality.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing published literature and other documents, designing experiments, analyzing data, and documenting findings. (50%)
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses on specific traffic safety topics as assigned. (30%)
  • Prepare technical write-ups and other electronic documents. (10%)
  • Participate in meetings and project team activities as necessary. (10%)
