Join us! Work Schedule Interns will work full-time during the summer and part-time during the academic year. No overtime. FLSA Status Hourly Non-Exempt Location 2500 Navy Way, Terminal Island, CA 90731 PURPOSE: Under supervision, the AI Intern will support the pilot, deployment, and evaluation of artificial intelligence systems designed to enhance terminal operations. The role focuses on applying data-driven and computer-vision-enabled solutions to identify operational inefficiencies, exceptions, and risk patterns, while ensuring cross-functional alignment and measurable business value delivery for Pier 400.

Requirements

  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Education – actively enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s degree program at a University/College with a STEM focus (Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or related discipline preferred).
  • Skills – preferred: Control systems or robotics design experience 0 – 3 years of exposure to artificial intelligence, data analytics, automation, or related technical domains.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, develop presentations, and communicate insights effectively.
  • Hands-on mechanical or electrical experience Passion for engineering and troubleshooting Programming & PC computer literacy (including experience with Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Collaboration – Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Functional Excellence – Good organizational skills and ability to follow directions.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and document business requirements for AI-enabled operational use cases.
  • Develop a working understanding of AI system architecture, performance limitations, cost drivers, and operational dependencies.
  • Execute assigned activities within an established project plan and support milestone tracking.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to deploy dashboards, configure data inputs, and validate system outputs.
  • Support camera configuration, calibration, and expansion activities where required.
  • Monitor AI system performance and support evaluation of pilot success criteria.
  • Assist with HSSE analytics, reporting, and performance metrics as capacity allows.
  • Participate in continuous improvement, safety, and operational excellence initiatives.
