About The Position

Under limited supervision, this position performs moderately complex assignments. The primary focus is to maintain, service, and perform routine maintenance on both potable and non-potable irrigation pump systems. The role requires experience with potable and non-potable pump systems, as well as general irrigation knowledge and skills. Responsibilities include performing routine irrigation maintenance and assisting lead technicians with major maintenance and repair tasks.

  • Ability to maintain and calibrate test equipment, including marking of Irrigation electrical wiring.
  • Ability to perform record keeping functions, data entry, and data management.
  • Ability to plan work activities, assist in providing performance feedback, and to plan schedules to meet objectives and goals of mission statement, and to keep accurate and timely records of work performed.
  • Ability to preform a wide range of physical and manual tasks outdoors and under all weather conditions, including the ability to stand, kneel and bend frequently and for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to provide feedback to the supervisor for reviews of lower-level employees.
  • Ability to test, maintain, and repair backflow devices.
  • Ability to train subordinate level employees and impart knowledge effectively.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays or emergencies as required to respond to Parks and Forestry maintenance needs, including on-call for snow removal or tree related emergencies.
  • Knowledge and experience in testing new and repaired equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Skills in utilizing tools, equipment, and software relevant to the role.
  • Skills in excellent communication and customer service.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years' experience in horticulture, turf management, irrigation, and general park maintenance.
  • Obtain relevant certifications, including First Aid, CPR, AED, Heavy Equipment Certification, CIT, ASSE Backflow Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree, certification, or completed training in a related field.
  • Certification(s) in water pump station maintenance or equivalent.
  • Experience working in public environments.
  • Degree or certification in Electrical Repair/Troubleshooting/Design or related.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge and understanding of resource conservation within a park’s maintenance context.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with high-visitor urban environments.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains potable and not potable water pump stations, turn-ons, maintenance, winterization, and winter maintenance.
  • Works with water purveyors, ditch riders, city water providers, and downstream users, regarding water use and water share transfer.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs irrigation system problems including but not limited to mainlines, point of connection assemblies, electric valves, backflow devices, manual valves, master valves, wiring and electrical connections, controllers, sprinkler heads, and improper hydraulic conditions.
  • Works with the irrigation lead(s) to develop a water schedule per park site based on that site’s monthly water budget.
  • Assists with installing commercial scale sprinkler systems including but not limited to point of connection, backflow prevention, pressure regulation, master valves, controllers, field wiring, various types of pipe and fittings, sprinkler heads, electric valves, etc.
  • Uses electrical testing equipment such as volt-ohm meter, fault locator, line locator, and toning device for troubleshooting maintenance and repairs.
  • Reads and uses irrigation and landscape construction plans and as-built plans in order to perform construction and repairs.
  • Reviews system generated trouble warnings daily and generates work orders for oneself and discusses Irrigation issues with Technicians within their assigned areas if appropriate.
  • Tests, maintains, and repairs backflow devices.
  • Assists irrigation lead(s) to develop a water schedule per park site based on that site’s monthly water budget.
  • Assists with writing specifications for irrigation materials and supplies as needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, including but not limited to asset management software system.
  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate irrigation repair parts inventory.
  • Enforce safety procedures, regulations, and policies to create a secure work environment.
  • Ultimately responsible for completing repairs in a safe, proper, and timely fashion.
  • Schedule and perform maintenance tasks on equipment ensuring the longevity of equipment.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations, which may include addressing tree damage, flood recovery, and other urgent matters.
