About The Position

CPJ’s Emergencies team is looking to hire a full-time Journalist Safety Advisor to provide physical and digital safety consultations, guidance, and training to individual journalists and newsrooms around the world. We are hiring for this position in response to the increasingly complex and holistic nature of journalist safety guidance CPJ provides, and the high levels of threat and harm journalists face around the world. The Journalist Safety Advisor will join a team of journalist safety and assistance experts, and would be responsible for delivering safety training and creating CPJ’s public-facing safety resources for journalists globally.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in journalist, newsroom, and/or media safety, specifically in physical and digital security. We will consider applicants who have worked in a related field.
  • An excellent working knowledge of the various and evolving types of safety risks journalists globally face, and the most effective ways to respond to them.
  • Proven experience in handling sensitive cases involving high-risk individuals or vulnerable people, with a trauma-informed approach.
  • Experience with creating and delivering safety training to journalists, or in educating newsrooms about their safety and security.
  • Ability to work with compassion and professionalism, maintaining confidentiality and trust with journalists and their newsrooms.
  • Proactive approach to work, with proven experience working independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience engaging stakeholders in national and international forums.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work calmly and professionally in high pressure situations, when rapid response is sometimes required.
  • Experience working with colleagues from different backgrounds and nationalities, and across time zones.
  • Written communication skills
  • Proficient in Google Workspace
  • Fluency in English

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in international human rights or press freedom organizations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing newsroom safety protocols.
  • Fluency in additional language(s), ideally Spanish or French.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver online and in-person physical and digital safety training and guidance to journalists and newsrooms globally, including individual consultations and briefings for groups of journalists and newsrooms.
  • Work across CPJ departments and with CPJ’s regional program teams to provide expertise and advice on safety issues and trends affecting journalists globally.
  • Working closely with the Journalist Safety Manager, build and maintain CPJ’s global network of safety trainers and safety organizations.
  • Work closely with the Journalist Safety Manager to ideate and produce safety material for journalists, to live on CPJ’s website and social media channels.
  • Work closely with the Journalist Safety Manager to systematically review and update the safety resources published on our website, ensuring they remain accurate, relevant, and up to date.
  • Provide safety guidance during emergency situations involving journalists at-risk.
  • Work closely with the Journalist Safety Manager, in designing and delivering digital and physical security training workshops to journalists, both virtually and in person.
  • Collaborate closely with the Journalist Assistance (JA) Program Coordinator to identify and assess risks associated with the implementation of Journalist Assistance initiatives.
  • Support the Emergencies Department by strengthening its awareness of evolving safety challenges affecting journalists globally, as well as best practices in risk mitigation, and produce memos and analytical reports when required.
  • Publicly represent CPJ at press freedom, journalist safety, freedom of expression, or other related events.
  • In collaboration with CPJ’s Emergencies colleagues and Regional Programs team members, review, assess, and process non-financial assistance requests related to physical and digital safety support.
