About The Position

GovCIO is currently hiring for a Journeyman Computer Systems Engineer with specialized expertise in System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) to support a mission‑critical U.S. Coast Guard program.This is an onsite, temporary full‑time position (6‑month assignment) with the possibility of conversion to a permanent role, based in Alexandria, VA.

Requirements

  • High School with 6 - 9 years (or commensurate experience)
  • Certifications: DoD 8570 IAT Level II (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+)
  • 5+ years supporting or administering SCOM in large enterprise or DoD environments.
  • Proven experience in SCOM infrastructure management, tuning, and management pack customization.
  • Strong understanding of Windows Server platforms (2012–2025), Active Directory, DNS, and Group Policy.
  • Proficiency with PowerShell for monitoring automation, reporting, and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of enterprise architecture, system integrations, and performance monitoring principles.
  • Familiarity with SQL Server databases used for SCOM operations and reporting.
  • Ability to diagnose issues across servers, networks, agents, and applications.
  • Skilled in developing comprehensive technical documentation, SOPs, and architectural diagrams.
  • Clearance Required: Active Secret clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting DoD or U.S. Coast Guard environments.
  • Azure Administrator Associate, Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate.
  • Knowledge of Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or hybrid cloud monitoring solutions.
  • Familiarity with other Microsoft System Center tools (MECM/SCCM, SCVMM, Orchestrator).
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, SNMP, and performance counter‑based monitoring.
  • ITIL experience supporting incident, problem, and change management.
  • Strong communication skills, able to present technical findings to varied

Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, and maintain SCOM environments to support enterprise‑wide infrastructure monitoring.
  • Develop and optimize monitoring rules, alerts, dashboards, and custom management packs.
  • Perform daily monitoring, system health checks, and performance analysis to ensure operational availability.
  • Troubleshoot SCOM agent issues, alerting inconsistencies, and platform performance problems.
  • Implement SCOM updates, patches, and routine maintenance activities.
  • Integrate SCOM with other enterprise systems and monitoring solutions.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, network, cybersecurity, and application teams to enhance observability.
  • Develop PowerShell scripts to automate monitoring tasks, reporting, and configuration management.
  • Produce detailed technical documentation, including configuration standards, procedures, and system diagrams.
  • Generate and analyze SCOM reports to support compliance, capacity planning, and operational decision‑making.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to IT teams regarding SCOM capabilities and monitoring best practices.
