About The Position

The Facilities Management department at CSU is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair and improvement of all academic, administrative, research and campus infrastructure. The Pipe/Mech Trades II (Journeyman HVAC Technician) is a high-level role responsible for the operation, diagnosis, and repair of complex climate control systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning refrigeration systems, and specialty equipment including fume hoods. In this role, you’ll need to think on your feet to stay on top of "Do It Now" (DIN) repairs and decide the most cost-effective methods for fixing or replacing failing equipment.

Requirements

  • Experience Only: Three (3) years of relevant and progressively responsible journeyman HVAC experience performing preventative maintenance and repairs on rotating mechanical systems (fans, sheaves, belts, bearings, motors, pumps and filters).
  • OR Education and Experience: A combination of related commercial HVACR education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant HVACR experience performing preventative maintenance, and repairs on buildings with rotating mechanical systems (fans, sheaves, belts, bearings, motors, pumps and filters) which are related to the work assigned equal to three (3) years. (30 credits = one year of experience)
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires)
  • Preemployment Physical
  • Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • Shift Work - May be required to work a rotating schedule to extend operational hours up to 12am. May be required to work weekend shifts as necessary.
  • On-call Status - May be required to work weekend shifts as necessary.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • A broad demonstration of knowledge skills and ability across all HVAC related disciplines.
  • Preventative maintenance HVAC experience that includes an emphasis on commercial / industrial experience over residential experience.
  • Independence, self-motivation, and pride in quality of work.
  • Demonstrated experience operating, diagnosing, and repairing HVAC control systems.
  • Knowledge of necessary equipment related to steam, hydronic, and gas-fired systems.
  • Directly related state service experience

Responsibilities

  • Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems - Operates, diagnoses, troubleshoots , replace , repairs various types of air conditioning and refrigeration systems and components. Performs preventative maintenance, diagnoses and repairs pumps, cooling towers, refrigerant and water piping, walk-in refrigerators, starters, coils, environmental chambers, ice machines, window A/C’s water coolers, and other various cooling equipment.
  • Heating and Ventilation - Troubleshoots, repair, replace, modifies and operates electrical, pneumatic and electronic control systems to gas and hot water heating system, air conditioning and ventilation systems. Operates heating and ventilation equipment to include steam, hydronic and gas fired systems. Perform maintenance services to components.
  • Disposal and Recycling - Proper use of refrigerant (CFC) recovery, reclaim, recycle refrigerant gases. Proper disposal techniques of contaminated CFC’s and hazardous materials (oil and gas) as outlined by Federal, State and local governments.
  • Preventative Maintenance - Perform scheduled, and non-scheduled preventive Maintenance on HVAC/R and Pneumatic equipment. Clean air intake as needed, check RTU blower motors, and condenser motor. Inspect the condition of all electrical hardware and connections, Test safety controls and equipment, check for proper operation of the interior unit, check the condensate drain pan for proper drainage.
