About The Position

Journeyman Lineman and Troublemen-Central & Coastal Regions (Augusta & Savannah Areas)    Placement at a headquarters will be based on availability of openings and if you are in a commutable distance of the headquarters.    Candidate must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the assignment location in order to meet "call out" requirements. If a candidate does not currently live within this area, candidate must be willing to immediately relocate to meet this requirement. Candidate must be available and accessible in times of emergency which could include evenings, weekends and holidays. Candidate must be available and accessible at least 50% of time for emergency "call-out". Candidate must be available for travel outside the state to support storm emergencies as needed. JOB SUMMARY Job Duties include (but not limited to): Pole Climbing (up to 60 feet). Working in an overhead position while on the pole. Pulling and splicing wires. Installing Electrical Service (pole to pole OR pole to service point). Operate/Drive Company Trucks including Bucket Trucks. Operate heavy equipment (Backhoe or similar equipment). Work in adverse conditions outdoors - day and night hours. Operate Electrical system - Transmission, Substation and Distribution Switching Writing Switching Orders Basic understanding of electrical Distribution Systems Troubleshooting After Hours first responder Note: This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power and IBEW Local 84 and is governed by this agreement. Union membership is optional. The starting salary for a Lineman is $49.55 (non-negotiable and level of experience does not apply) and this pay is governed by this agreement which includes an increase every six months assuming satisfactory performance, until you max out in your job classification and a negotiated general increase every July.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Journeyman Lineman with a minimum of 5 years' experience in the electric utility industry and 3 years of Journeyman Lineman experience working with voltages above 600 volts. 
  • Overhead distribution experience (up to 25Kv) required.
  • Must demonstrate skills, knowledge, and ability by successfully completing the company's pre-employment New Journeyman Evaluation will be required.
  • Familiar with work involving energized conductors required.
  • Familiar with heavy equipment directly related to line work skill sets.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of hand tools.
  • Experience using hydraulic and battery tools.
  • Previous experience with material handling bucket trucks.
  • Knowledge of when and how to apply proper cover-up in energized situations.
  • Proficient climber up to 60 feet.
  • Knowledge of circuit protection.
  • Ability to take instructions, directions and translate into actions.
  • Familiar with industry standard safe work practices.
  • Pre-employment testing may be required depending on level of related work experience.
  • Ability to quickly learn the Georgia Power work practices and work rules
  • Must be available for scheduled or emergency call out which could include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be available to travel outside of the state for storm restoration as needed.
  • Currently holds a valid driver's license and "Class A" CDL is required.
  • Currently meets a maximum weight of 270 lbs. fully clothed (includes hard hat and work boots) due to weight-restricted aerial devices required.
  • Customer oriented, team player, willing to learn new skills, motivated, resourceful, excellent driving skills, proactive, performs work following safety standards and procedures.
  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license). 
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
  • Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record

Nice To Haves

  • Underground distribution experience (up to 25Kv) preferred.
  • Previous experience working on the Georgia Power system highly preferred.
  • Leadership experience preferred.
  • Construction and maintenance line work is desirable.
