About The Position

The Marcella Park Sports Center will provide free, high-quality childcare for youth in East Boston throughout the summer months. In a safe and inclusive environment, participating youth will engage in a wide range of structured recreational activities. The Sports Center offers children meaningful opportunities to express themselves positively through sports, arts, and play, while promoting social-emotional development, physical wellness, and a strong sense of community. The Junior Sports Specialist position at the Marcella Park Sports Center is a valuable opportunity for youth employees to gain hands-on experience in recreation, leadership, and teamwork. As part of the team, Junior Sports Specialists assist the Supervisor in various aspects of the program to ensure its smooth operation and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. This role offers youth employees the chance to develop essential skills such as responsibility, teamwork, communication, and leadership while making a positive impact in their community.

Requirements

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be between 15 and 18 years of age to be eligible for the role.
  • Desire to Work with Children: Candidates must have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for working with children, including both able-bodied and disabled youth, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Responsibility: The role requires a responsible individual who can handle various tasks and situations with maturity.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in volunteering or participating in human service programs is preferred, as it demonstrates a commitment to helping others and an understanding of working in a community-focused setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with Children: Supporting and guiding children during program activities, offering help when needed to ensure everyone is engaged and safe.
  • Following Directions: Junior Sports Specialists must be able to follow instructions from supervisors and senior staff to ensure the program runs effectively.
  • One-on-One Support: Some specialists may be assigned to work closely with a specific child throughout the day, providing individualized support to meet their needs.
  • Supporting Counselors: Helping other counselors with tasks or children who may need extra assistance during the program.
  • Training and Meetings: Attending required meetings and training sessions to develop skills and stay informed about program guidelines and safety procedures.
  • Swimming Participation: If applicable, participating in swimming activities to support water-based programs or ensure safety.
  • Cleanup: Assisting in cleaning up the program area at the end of the day to maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Other Duties: Supporting the team with any additional tasks as assigned by counselors or supervisors to ensure the program runs smoothly.
