The Senior Veterinary Technician provides technical and clinical support for a variety of laboratory animal species, including rodents, rabbits, and swine. The SVT is responsible for training research and animal care staff in essential technical skills. This role leads the rodent import and export program, coordinating all aspects of animal shipment in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. Administrative responsibilities include managing inventory and ordering of veterinary supplies, coordinating equipment maintenance, and preparing and submitting billing charges for veterinary services and materials. Provide pre, peri, and post-operative support for rodents, rabbits, swine and other laboratory animals ; induce anesthesia, monitor animals under anesthesia, identify and triage peri-operative complications,, provide post-surgical care under the direction of the veterinarian(s). Provide training for research and animal care staff on fundamental technical skills including handling, restraint, injections, blood collection, anesthesia, and euthanasia of rodents, rabbits, swine and other laboratory animals Maintains and provides training on in-house veterinary equipment such as radiograph equipment, anesthetic machines, ventilators, pulse oximeters, I-STAT, Vet Scan blood chemistry analyzer, AIMS tattooing unit, and other equipment . Serve as primary veterinary liaison between the animal caretakers and veterinarians in responding to clinical cases;triage clinical cases, communicate assessments and plans to research staff, provide stabilizing treatments at the direction of the veterinarian, follow-up on cases and administer medical treatments at the direction of the veterinarian Leads rodent import/export program. Respond to investigator requests to initiate rodent imports and exports; coordinate all aspects of the shipment process, including communication with external institutions, vendors, and shipping companies, obtaining and reviewing health records, arranging required health testing, and ensuring the safe and compliant transport of animals in accordance with institutional policies and applicable federal, state, and international regulations. Manage inventory and procurement of veterinary supplies and equipment; place orders as needed, create and submit accurate charges to the business office for supplies and services provided by the veterinary staff Assist in creating and updating departmental SOPs.
