About the position

We are actively recruiting for a full-time Lab Assistant to join our MedStar Health Research Institute team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. The Firefighters' Burn and Surgical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for participating in aspects of basic, translational, and clinical research under the supervision of the Laboratory Director and PI. Offers a diverse experience in basic and translational biomedical research, as well as exposure to some aspects of clinical research, primarily involving a trauma and burn patient population. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent basis without the need for current or future sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes data and prepares for presentation at professional meetings and/or publication.
  • Provides authorship on subsequent published material.
  • Assists with small and large animal husbandry/cadaveric specimens (up to 65lbs), surgery and procedures.
  • Assists with training new volunteers and interns with oversight of their work.
  • Maintains all associated study related documentation including regulatory files.
  • Communicates with investigators, clinical coordinators and colleagues to ensure effective clinical trial implementation and progress.
  • Assists research coordinator with patient treatment and follow-up visits, as needed and if applicable.
  • Maintains detailed records and lab notebooks in accordance with laboratory SOPs.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and sample inventories in respective databases and assists with freezer database management.
  • Participates in lab meetings and related meetings and seminars.
  • Plans and executes basic biological assays.
  • Processes human and animal specimens.
  • Takes appropriate courses (animal training, safety, CITI, etc.).
  • Works as a liaison with collaborating labs and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related field required.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory setting and a willingness to learn new techniques required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with Good Documentation Practices.
  • Knowledge of basic chemical and biologic laboratory practices including sterile technique, decontamination procedures, reagent aliquoting and labeling and specimen labeling and management.
  • Basic skills in using laboratory equipment, including but not limited to centrifuges, analytical balances, pipettes and autoclaves.
