About The Position

The Laboratory Courier is responsible for transporting patient specimens and other health care related materials for Valley Health System. The Laboratory bears sole responsibility for specimen integrity during the transportation process. To accomplish this duty, the courier is trained and knowledgeable about factors affecting specimen integrity and specimen types.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Valid and clean driver’s license is required.
  • Proof of current automobile liability insurance is required.
  • Skills to operate vehicles in all weather conditions.
  • Must be neat and have a pleasant personality.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally.
  • Maintain records that apply to courier duties.
  • Skills to operate vehicles in all weather conditions.
  • Required to submit to periodic drug screenings.
  • Must be adaptable and flexible to handle changes in work systems, workload, emergency situations and personnel shortages.
  • No preventable vehicular incidents, points, or negative road observations on driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Drives to client’s offices for pick-up of specimens.
  • Courier must be familiar with unique individual client requirements and characteristics such as pick up times and locations, and extraneous factors that are not always readily evident to assist in time management.
  • Delivers specimens to appropriate lab section after accessioning is complete.
  • Checks specimens against request slips for proper collection.
  • Initiates sub-optimal specimen forms if necessary.
  • Completes daily route log including auto check.
  • Prepares reports for distribution.
  • Delivers laboratory reports in a timely fashion.
  • Picks up requests, fills orders, and returns necessary supplies.
  • Performs weekly checks at each client location and recommends any action needed.
  • Assists with any processing of samples.
  • Participates in the training of any new courier employees
  • Contributes to the positive work climate and overall team effort of the department.
  • Participates in focus committees to study, assess and recommend improvements for laboratory operations.
  • Observes established safety procedures and OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens and consistent use of personal protective equipment as needed.
