About The Position

Laboratory Manager Responsible for the operational leadership, administration, financial performance, and regulatory compliance of the Clinical and Anatomical Laboratories. Ensures delivery of high quality, cost effective, and compliant laboratory services in alignment with organizational goals and accreditation standards. The Laboratory Manager provides comprehensive oversight of daily laboratory operations, personnel management, financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement initiatives. This position ensures efficient workflow, appropriate staffing, and adherence to all federal, state, and accrediting agency requirements. The Laboratory Manager collaborates closely with the Laboratory Medical Director and reports to the Senior Director of Clinical Support Services. The Laboratory Manager provides comprehensive oversight of daily laboratory operations, personnel management, financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement initiatives. This position ensures efficient workflow, appropriate staffing, and adherence to all federal, state, and accrediting agency requirements. The Laboratory Manager collaborates closely with the Laboratory Medical Director and reports to the Senior Director of Clinical Support Services.

  • Registry as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree required.
  • Must meet current qualifications under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA-88) and applicable state regulations.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Medical Technologist in a clinical laboratory.
  • Minimum two (2) years of progressive leadership experience required.
  • Working knowledge of LIS and HIS systems required.

  • Experience managing regulatory inspections and accreditation surveys preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Directs daily operations of all sections within the Clinical and Anatomical Laboratories.
  • Establishes operational standards to ensure quality, safety, efficiency, and timely service delivery.
  • Prioritizes diagnostic procedures and ensures appropriate staffing coverage.
  • Assists with laboratory testing during periods of high volume or staffing shortages as needed.
  • Oversees workflow processes to optimize turnaround time and service performance.
  • Develops and administers the departmental operating and capital budgets in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Monitors labor productivity, supply utilization, and cost containment initiatives.
  • Evaluates equipment needs and participates in capital planning and procurement processes.
  • Reviews vendor contracts and service agreements to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Ensures laboratory compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA-88), Oregon Department of Human Services regulations, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Joint Commission standards.
  • Maintains continuous inspection readiness.
  • Oversees proficiency testing, competency validation, and quality documentation.
  • Ensures testing systems provide quality laboratory services across pre analytic, analytic, and post analytic phases of testing.
  • Monitors reportable diseases and collaborates with Infection Prevention as appropriate.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors laboratory Quality Improvement programs.
  • Reviews quality control data, patient test results, and performance metrics for accuracy and reliability.
  • Investigates quality concerns and implements corrective actions.
  • Participates in hospital wide quality and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Oversees recruitment, hiring, orientation, performance evaluations, counseling, discipline, and termination processes in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Develops staff schedules and monitors time and attendance.
  • Promotes continuing education, competency assessment, and professional development.
  • Fosters a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Oversees laboratory information system functionality and collaborates with Information Technology to maintain effective system integration.
  • Evaluates and implements new technologies and diagnostic methodologies.
  • Works collaboratively with physicians, nursing leadership, and other departments to improve patient care and laboratory services.
  • Participates in hospital committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
