Job Role SummaryThis position, under the general supervision of the Breastfeeding Coordinator (BFC) is responsible for assisting BFC in performing high-risk breastfeeding consultations with clients within established federal, state, and local agency guidelines and regulations of Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC). This position is also responsible for assisting the BFC with mentoring and supporting staff to improve and encourage a supportive breastfeeding environment.Essential Duties Assist BFC in Coordinating and providing information, counseling and support to WIC participants prenatal and post-partum, local WIC staff and Marion County Health Department (MCHD) staff, as well as community members, to increase breastfeeding success and duration. Responsible for ensuring all breastfeeding high risk clients are counseled and mandatory documentation in INWIC is completed. Provide guidance for establishing local agency breastfeeding high risk policies and procedures. Attends required State meetings and breastfeeding training, continues to advance breastfeeding knowledge through participation in available conferences, workshops, shadowing, and participating in team meetings. May assist WIC and MCPHD staff in promoting breastfeeding services through special projects and duties as assigned. Maintain confidentiality of all client records and information as specified by Health Insurance Probability and Accountability act of 1996. Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercise and respond to public health emergencies, when required. Participate in a minimum of two H.O.P.E events totaling of minimum eight (8) hours annually. Other duties as assigned. Associated Job Duties Transport, on occasion, client information and or supplies between MCHD health offices following HIPAA guidelines.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma required.
  • 3+ years WIC experience and/or Breastfeeding counseling preferred.
  • On-going education and/or training in lactation management.
  • Professional licenses/certification as appropriate.
  • Must be able to function as a team leader and advisor as it relates to the development of breastfeeding efforts internally and externally.
  • Access to a personal car.
  • Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program and principles of current breastfeeding practices.
  • Manage time and skills to work effectively and efficiently under pressure.
  • Effectively organize, assign and supervise work of others.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state and local guidelines and regulations.
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Work effectively on a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Good judgment and discretion in communication.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing program/department needs and activities.
  • Flexibility in work hours due to conferences/trainings/in-services, etc.
